"Sonam Wanchuk Taken For Essential Care": Police Ask Protesters to Leave Jantar Mantar

Police officials moved Wangchuk to a Delhi hospital early on Saturday morning amid protests and slogan-shouting by demonstrators.

The Delhi Police on Saturday urged protesters at Jantar Mantar to leave the site "peacefully at the earliest" after shifting activist Sonam Wangchuk from the protest venue to a hospital.

Police officials moved Wangchuk to a Delhi hospital early on Saturday morning amid protests and slogan-shouting by demonstrators.

In a statement issued after the operation, the Delhi Police said the decision was taken in compliance with the Delhi High Court's directions and in view of Wangchuk's deteriorating health.

"Sonam Wangchuk has been shifted to the hospital for essential medical care," Police statement said.

According to reports, Wangchuk has been admitted to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital. He is conscious and his vitals are stable.

The police also appealed to those gathered at Jantar Mantar to disperse peacefully.

"While complying with the orders of Hon'ble High Court the protesters tried to create obstruction, in which slight commotion ensued. Police, however, exercised maximum restrain and undertook the exercise safely. We request the protesters at Jantar Mantar to peacefully vacate the place at the earliest."

Following Wangchuk's removal, Delhi Police personnel were seen making repeated announcements at Jantar Mantar asking protesters to leave the venue peacefully.

Activists of the satirical social media platform Cockroach Janata Party have been staging a protest at Jantar Mantar for 29 days, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak.

Wangchuk, who has been backing the CJP protest, began his hunger strike 21 days ago, and his health has worsened over the past several days.

The police action came two days after the Delhi High Court directed the Centre to "do whatever it takes" to protect Sonam Wangchuk's life.

Doctors who examined Wangchuk on Friday described his condition as an emergency, warning of the risk of organ failure.

Daily medical bulletins have repeatedly expressed concern over Wangchuk's health. A medical update issued two days ago said the activist had lost more than eight kilograms and that his condition was continuing to deteriorate.
